Tired Mornings

You don’t know this yet, but I went back to work part time. I started Monday, and have worked the last three nights. I also have class tonight and I need to find some time to study for it.

I am tired. Not because anything is particularly difficult, just from a lack of sleep and relaxation.  I am literally meeting S at the door when he gets home from work so that I can walk out the door to go to work, and the same will be happening tonight for class. He and I will get to catch up on Saturday, sometime.

Tired mornings need coffee

I know I have mentioned to you a few times about getting up before my kids, and seriously, I need that. I am not an early bird. I am a total night owl. I have found that I am nicer, more relaxed, and better equipped to handle my kids when I get an hour without them in the morning.

Each morning that S and I have woken up early, our kids have too.  Actually, I think they are racing us, to see who can get up first. It is making me a crazy person.

I understand from their perspective that they are awake, and they have no concept of time, so they are ready to go. To them it is time to be awake and start the day. The problem is that previously we could put them back to bed and they would go back to sleep. Now, once they discover mommy and daddy are no longer in bed, their is no going back to sleep for them.

There have been two particularly fun mornings that have come from all of this.

One morning while mommy and daddy were downstairs getting ready to face the day, they worked together to empty all the contents of K1’s dresser, in addition to the shelves full of books, animals, and blankets.

A second morning mommy and daddy were still in bed trying to sleep. K1 decided to take down the gate so that she and her brother could go downstairs. Once there, they played a little Uno, and used pieces of gum to bet. I’m joking on the betting part. They did get my purse off of the counter and remove every piece of gum from both the pack, and it’s wrapper. After they realized that gum is not actually fun, they tried to smush them back into the gum package. At least they cleaned up, right?

I am at a loss right now. I need sleep, AND time to collect myself in the morning.

How do you keep your kids in bed until it’s “time” to get up?

Mommy Time

It’s no secret that I do not do a very good job at taking time or doing things for me. I find it very easy to put my family’s needs before my own. To me their needs are very visible. I figure I can wait a little longer, and a little longer, until ….. well I don’t know what will happen, and would rather not find out honestly.

I have noticed lately that my fuse is shorter than normal. Frustrated and exasperated with my children more easily than I would like. I told S this weekend that on his next day off I needed to take some time away while the kids are awake. That part is key for me. I feel like when I get away at night while the kids are sleeping that I am just cheating myself. I get less sleep and I don’t get to sleep in.

With nothing particularly exciting in mind, I took myself to Starbucks for an iced coffee. Of course in perfect Gwen fashion, I forgot my fancy new reusable iced beverage cup. I HAD to have it for the fourth of July. Because clearly my citrus iced tea would taste that much more amazing out of a reusable iced beverage cup than it would if slurped from a red solo cup. Duh! Well, I am bound to remember it one of these times. Of course at my rate that will be next year. Still next year when I use it, it will be amazing. Minus all the freezer ice stuff it’s collecting.

I wasn’t sure what I would want to do upon my child free trip. So I brought a class list, new book to read, kindle, and of course my phone. Lucky me captain crazy sat down next to me. No I am not being mean or calling names. I actually wondered if I should call the mental health dept. For real. Singing and dancing in a chair all alone at Starbucks doesn’t make you crazy. No, not that alone anyhow, but coupled with conversations alone, that does. I actually tried to talk to him thinking he was looking for a friend. Nope. He had one already. He’s just the only one who could see him or her. Sweet. Good thing I wasn’t reading at that time. I would not have been able to focus on a single word on the page.

I sat and burned through my phone battery, and then moved on to the Kindle where I sorted through classes for next semester. I finished up my free time at Starbucks with the first chapter of a new book. Then I walked to the store picking up a few things and headed home. As luck would have it I was greeted by a quiet and mostly empty house. That was a nice bonus surprise. I was able to read a few more pages before the family returned.

I definitely feel a little bit recharged. I guess sometimes it really is good to get away.

What is your go to get a way activity?

Story Time and a Princess

Do you see who that is in the photo above?
Yup it’s Ariel. Reading stories to the kiddos.
We haven’t been to Java Mama for quite some time. This photo is from our previous trip (before story time with Ariel). K1 made the news on this trip. This was some time in 2012, it’s been that long. I decided that for Ariel, the trip was worth it. I mean she is K1’s favorite. Like favorite, favorite.
If it wasn’t so far I just might go here every day. Yes I said everyday and I mean it. Coffee and calm for mom, play time for the kiddos. Supervised play I might add. So go ahead chat, and laugh, and sip. I like that they have the occasional story time to mix things up a bit. Previously we went for a signing story time, which was also very good.
When we attended story time with Ariel I figured we would stay for an hour or two and then head home for nap time. WRONG. I forgot they had an outdoor play area too. Between story time, the supervised play area, the outdoor play area, and the coaster that they story time room turns into afterward, the kids were plenty busy.
We were there for 3 hours. My kids slept gloriously on the way home, and were transferred into their beds to continue napping. That might be even better than my ice cold caramel latte that I enjoyed while the played.
I know it’s hard to tell from the above photo, but clearly dress up is fun for K1 other places too. Not just at home. Oh, and she is ALWAYS Ariel. She was singing and swaying when I snapped this shot. She could use some singing lessons, unlike the Ariel who was there to tell stories to the kiddos. She sang the Dream is a Wish Cinderella song marvelously. I don’t think I have ever heard anyone sing that song in person, and she did great.
Days like this make me think I should get out more. This was really nice.
Where is your mommy getaway?

Gwen
Just an FYI, this is not a sponsored post. I spent money to take my kids to story times here and for me to drink coffee. I like them and just thought I would share.

Really?

Morning!

Let’s talk about why I only got 4 hours of sleep last night. I am still tired. I am also confused.

This beautiful lady is Scarlet. She is my first child. She is a Springer Spaniel. She also happens to share her birthday with my son. This year she will be 6 in human years. The vet recently told me she is now what they call middle aged. Sad face. You mean she is really not going to live forever like I told her to do so many years ago?

First let me just say, she is great. I love how when people meet her for the first time they often think she is a puppy. I just laugh, and tell them to wait 20 minutes, she calms right down. She is a lover. Her goal in life is to find a warm lap, with an arm that will touch her (petting is not even required), and stay there as long as possible.
Squirrels make her crazy. I think they used to torture her in my last apartment in NC. We had a huge living room window which would look out into woods. Squirrels would come right up to the window, even with this dog barking and going crazy inside. Scarlet was in the squirrel zoo. I used to imagine squirrels looking at her the way we look at monkeys in the zoo. Maybe not, but …

Child #1, Scarlet is child #2’s (DD) best friend. I can’t tell you how many pictures there are like this in my phone. DD is/was always laying with Scarlet. Just after Scarlet got over her fear of fur being pulled by this little thing that just learned to crawl, they became friends.
Now that you know how close they are, you can begin to understand why I am sleepily hoping for coffee to magically appear in a cup mixed to the perfect blend of light and sweet, just for me.

Yesterday I went to a friends house to get away for a few hours. It was a really nice time. Lots and lots of talking about more than just kids, and blocks, and Signing Time. Great time for a mama of two.

That being said, I did not feed my DS for about five hours. That meant that I came home to feed him, then I needed to pump. (Ugh) While I was sitting on the living room floor pumping, my wondrous doggy decided that she wanted some love. I went along with her wants. I was petting her chest with my arm wrapped around her when my fingers found something in her fur.

This is not uncommon for any pet owner. Especially when you have a long haired dog. Dirt gets caught in her fur, I mean everything. The first thing I pulled off of her chest was white. Pasta maybe? DD and S did have spaghetti for dinner. The second thing I pulled off of her had a leg.

Yup, it was a tick. I flipped.

I haven’t pulled a tick off of her since before I left NC.(4 years ago) It was also larger than the deer ticks that I am used to. It was in an odd spot, on her chest/neck area. Deer ticks usually like places like her arm pits.

By “flipped”, I mean, I threw it. Yup. Flicked it with my fingers as soon as I saw what it was.

My next immediate reaction was to tell S that I was an idiot. That I pulled a tick off of our dog and threw it somewhere on the carpeted floor in the living room, and that I can already not see it.

He didn’t get it.

He did not think that I really pulled a tick off of the dog. Therefore he did not understand my distress.

We have two small children. One who is learning to crawl. A tick burrowed into the carpet waiting for something to hitch a ride on is not exactly a great environment for a crawling baby.

I spent the next hour scouring every tuft of anything on our BROWN carpet. Nothing. Checked all over my CHARCOAL couch. Nothing. After what was at least an hour, S checked the dog and saw the spot where the tick was attached. Blood and all. At least now he believed that I found a tick

Now he moved on to, “We’re never going to find it”. He thinks that they are fast.

Really?  Have you never encountered a tick before? “No” …… sigh.

At this point I moved on to the idea that Scarlet recollected the tick. She’s so sweet. After a couple deep breaths I convinced myself that I will not flip out when I find the tick. Because I will find it, in her fur, and have to pull it out. Scouring the first half of her body went by uneventful. The back paw was not quite as fun free.

I saw it. That brown ugly thing. I was squeamish. I didn’t grab it. S didn’t see it. Remember he was skeptic? He now doesn’t believe that I saw the tick. Really? Are you kidding me? You didn’t believe there even was one, and there was. Why would I dream this up? Not sure, but that is what he thought. He kept asking me, “Are you sure you saw it?”. He even went back to looking in the carpet a few times.

I finally gave up hope. Vacuumed the floor and decided to give the dog a bath. S got in bed.

How could I just give up? They lay eggs, and stuff. DS and DD are on the floor A LOT.

I asked him to watch the water as I bathe the dog. It is shedding season and clumps of fur were going to come out. When I got started he saw why I asked him to watch the draining water. He even suggested checking the fur clumps as some of them were large. Washing her only resulted in a clean dog. No tick sightings, or feelings. So we dried her off and climbed into bed at 3:30AM. I laid there for at least an hour awake. Searching online, tossing and turning, listening to Scarlet chew and scratch ….. angry, frustrated, and concerned that I didn’t find the tick.

So tell me how I woke up to this, in the open toilet in the bathroom? How did I not see it before going to bed? S said that it must have landed there when Scarlet shook after the shower.
Really? REALLY?! Really, really?
How was this the first thing that I saw when I walked into the bathroom, yet I didn’t see it when I was going to bed? How did it fly off of her when my fingers couldn’t find it? How did it land in the toilet? Did it fall there from somewhere else?
I actually asked S if he found it and put it there ….. silly girl. He didn’t think it exhisted.
What did he say to me when I showed it to him? “Well at least I know you weren’t crazy”?
Really?
So now I wonder, are there more? …. ugh.
Have you ever had a similar situation? What happened, or what did you do?
I just wanted to say that while proof reading this post S came in with Starbucks for two. Love that man.

Recycled garden

Aloe vera, some button flower, cherry tree and cilantro
Welcome to what I like to call my recycled garden!

I have now had the Aloe Vera so long that I can’t remember what it looked like when I got it. It did start as a small potted plant as did the Cilantro, and Christmas Cactus.

There remaining plants have been grown from seeds. I went through this phase of planting the seeds from the food I ate. So I saved seeds and tried my best to grow them. I do have an Avocado seed planted, however it’s not much to look at right now so no photo.

Lettuce

So you can’t see it in this photo but this is now the third round with lettuce from seed. After this I quit and will move on to something else. The photo to the right is about as large as the lettuce gets and then it just gives up. After talking to a lady at my knitting group she said that she and her husband have a hard time with lettuce. Something about tying it up and forcing it to head.         Ideas?

All my plants are in organic soil, and I use organic fertilizer. No I do not go to a store and buy fertilizer. I use trash! Ha ha, no I don’t compost. Not that I don’t want to but it’s not ideal for apartment life. I use coffee that is not consumed, used coffee ground, used tea leaves, and the water left after steaming vegetables. I have only had one plant complain, Basil. Basil was not a fan of coffee and it went and killed itself … I mean I killed it.

So I will be making two of these in the next week or two and I could use some help. I want to plant edibles or herbs in the top row of both of these, the rest can be whatever.

What do I plant?

One will be in indirect sunlight all the time, but it gets fairly warm. The second one will get more sun and super hot. I would love to hear your suggestions.

Do you have an indoor/outdoor garden? Do you use your wasted items in it?
