April #WearMoreDresses2014 update

Remember those goals I set, back in January? I’m not so sure I am doing a great job with them. I plan to review them sometime this month and evaluate myself, but for now let’s talk about dresses.


Basically I haven’t worn any in the last two months. I have been wearing work out clothes a lot, but dresses, When I wake up in the morning I tell myself that I am going to the gym, so I get dressed to do so. I tell myself that I will come home and shower and then change into clothes for the rest of the day. What actually happens doesn’t always match what I tell myself will happen.








You can see I had quite a few failed shopping attempts. It is challenging to buy a dress off a shelf somewhere. My body does not fit into a cookie cutter mold. I am also sure that a lot of you also have this problem. Maybe that’s why making your own clothes is increasing in popularity.


I am glad that I am ahead of all the dress wearing I did last year, because so far I am sucking at this goal of mine.

Wear More Dresses February Update



Operation ” #WearMoreDresses2014″ has been more of a challenge than I expected it to be. If you remember my goals for the year then you know exactly where this is coming from.


Since about a month has passed I think it is a good time to update you on my progress.


It has been hard. At the start of this I only had 4 dresses in my closet. One of which I will never wear again. It makes girls who are board thin look pregnant. I won’t be entering into any pageants, but I still want to feel good, and like how I look.



I knew I need to add s a few dresses to my closet, however dress hunting has been rough. Until a week ago I wanted to quit this silly goal and say that I already completed it, just because shopping has been so hard. I have gone shopping a few times, and turned over all the racks in all the stores I went to, only to leave empty handed.


I guesstimate that last year I wore a dress 5 times. This is a gross over estimation because I actually only remember wearing a dress twice.


Last weekend I finally had some dress shopping success, when I wasn’t actually dress shopping. I left with two new dresses, and now I feel this goal is more achievable. I also went out and bought a pair of black leggings, so that I can wear my summery dresses in the winter.



The dress pictured is one of my random finds. Sweater dress, matching my new hair for $10. Win! Paired with a tank top and leggings, and it’s warm enough to go out in. Also I will now be making silly faces every time someone takes a picture of me. It makes me feel better.


When I first started #WearMoreDresses2014 I didn’t think I would instagram every dress I wore. I thought there would be so many that it would be overwhelming. Ha, that was a joke. So I think I will be instagramming all the dresses. Except the one I wore on Valentines day because I didn’t take a picture. No worries, I am sure I will be wearing it again.

Another Week in Photos

Yes, Friday was yesterday. I didn’t miss it. I enjoyed it with my family. Daddy was home after a week of training. That means you get this update today.


I set a goal to wear more dresses this year. I decided that maybe some of you would like to play along as well. Hence the creation of #WearMoreDresses2014. If you are on Instagram or Twitter feel free to play along. Tag your photo’s with this hashtag, so we can follow along in the fun.

Then I wore my second dress of the year, AND went on a date with daddy. Look at me go with those goals.


We went the the Fit SD party hosted by San Diego Magazine. It was a good time, and much more than I had expected.



I altered one of our regular family recipes to make if vegan. I was unsure how it would come out. I am pretty adventurous with recipes, and I am confident in making changes, but these were some big changes. I was just concerned. My exact words to S were “dinner will either be amazing, or terrible. I’m not sure which.”



When the results came in, dinner was both edible, and tasty. It does not taste the same as the meat version, but I did not expect it to. It was good all on it’s own. Vegan Cottage Pie for the win.



Sometimes you just have to stop and admire the beauty around you. It is easy to do when you find this next to you.

2013 Goal Wrap up

Last year I put together a list of goals for myself, and a little bit for our family. Let me see how we did.

  • Save, save, save, budget, budget, budget.  Pretty much a fail on this one entirely! We are so far from “on track” it isn’t funny. We will work on this again this year, but I have a different approach in mind.
  • Try to incorporate more vegan meals.We did pretty well with this overall. I even came up with a few of my own vegan recipes. One I shared with you guys.
  • Get in better shape. I did okay with this. Last January came with an unexpected set back, my dog being attacked. I weigh less now than I did last January, and I look better too. I am just not where I had hoped to be.
  • Find a part time job. Done!
  • Complete two college classes. Done! I even signed up for two classes for this semester, well I am on the waitlist, but pretty confident I will get in.


Goals for 2014


I think I will go along with many of the same goals as last year. Also I am still not the resolution type, just in case you were curious.

  • Save, again – Last year we did save some, but things happened and we had to use it all for various things. At this moment we have a teeny, tiny, savings. We need to work on that. Get back to where saving was second nature.
  • Continue working towards a healthier body – both through diet and exercise. We don’t eat terribly, but we still could eat better at times.
  • Plan a wedding – did you think I forgot about this? Well, I didn’t.
  • Get more organized and focused on home schooling – yes K1 is only at a preschool level, but if I want to seriously consider hybrid homeschooling for kindergarten then I need to get a better handle on things today, while it is still easy.
  • Knit something for myself – I enjoy crafting and knitting in particular, but I hardly make anything for myself. The cardi I knit for myself is not really wearable. It is much to big now. I am considering pulling it all out and reknitting it in a smaller size, but not sure it’s a great idea.


What are your goals for 2014?

On working out

You may or may not realize that I have been back to the gym for the last three, going on four months. It feels good. The first week back was rough because little K2 had separation anxiety. After a hard core week of going every day and pushing for as much time as possible, he can now stay in child watch at the Y for as long as I need. That is as long as his sister is in there with him. (we started with only 16 mins, big improvement)

That first week at the gym all I did was cardio. Then I would come home and do a few muscle toning exercises. Simple things. Squats and planks, I know I mentioned before. Then as K2 held out I gradually increased my plans for gym time. I started developing a shin splint in the same leg that I had surgery on. I really think it is more an overworked and under developed muscle. None the less I had to tone down my working out, or rather change what I was doing. I added in swimming instead of running.

The time has been really nice. I get to do something for me, and get time away from my babies. They get to play with new toys and other kids, everyone wins.

The beginning of last week we were home bound. Unable to go to the Y because my daughter K1 was sick with a high fever. Since I have had children this would be the point where I drop off working out. I won’t say I give up, because I don’t actually think about it. That is the problem. When life gets in the way I just go on, don’t think about what I want or need to do, I just react.

Last Saturday, which was the last day I went to the gym, S said that I should wait and work out with him at night. Then Sunday K1 was too miserably sick for us to go anywhere. I thought about working out in the afternoon, in the living room. Except I remembered what S said the day before, so I chose not to. I decided to wait for him. When he walked through the door arriving home from work I informed him that I did not work out specifically so that we could work out together when the kids went to bed. He was not exactly receptive. He started listing excuses. I can’t blame him, there was no forewarning or anything, I just sprung it on him (a day after he said something, but whatever, details).

Needless to say, we worked out together. He basically called me a slave driver, but it’s okay. In the begining that’s what you need. Someone there to push you when your not sure you want to go. What was unexpected was the neighbors coming out to watch when we were doing exercises outside. No it was not like it sounds, an audience. It was lucky timing, people were coming and going at the time that we happened to be sweating our you-know-whats off. Three families of neighbors in all. The nice part was the added motivation they offered. One of the neighbors said how nice it was that S would do that for me. Talking about how her husband wouldn’t do the same.

It’s hard to work out alone. It really is. It takes more motivation to go it alone, then it does when someone is there with you, putting in the work with you. After thinking about what our neighbor said S and I had grand ideas of our whole block working out together in the parking lot at dusk. Don’t worry I’m not delusional enough to think that it will actually happen, but how fun would that be? Laughing at each other together, pushing together. I think it could be fun. I guess that’s why there are group fitness classes at local gyms.

Trying To Find Me Time

Let’s just start with letting you know my kids are still not healthy. Well, maybe they are better, but they both vomited early on Monday morning. Yesterday K2 woke up with what looks like Pink Eye. Fortunately I have drops from when he had pink eye before and started using them. Today his eye is much less pink, and it never swelled. All of that being said we are working on three weeks of sickness and stuck inside time.

I am not very good at doing things that benefit me, taking time away and the like. So you can imagine that the last three weeks have been worse than normal. No doing reading homework at the gym. No play dates of any type. (even the ones that were planned ahead of time) I have been going a little crazy.

Well I still decided this week to find some time for myself. Saturday night S was very tired and I snuck away to a friends house to hang out and chat. It was much needed. I didn’t realize how much so until I looked at the time at 3 AM. Oops. Silly mama, kids wake up with or without you.

Yes I have done other, healthier things too. I agreed to participate in a group to motivate each other to work out and eat well. The first group suggestion was to do a plank challenge. You do 1 plank every day. 1 minute each day for the first week, 2 minutes each day for week 2, and so on for a month. I second agreed to do a squat challenge. You start with 30 squats on day one and increase by 5 each day, also ending at a month. Lastly I agreed to participate in daily workouts which are about 20 minutes. There have only been three days of work outs so far and I have not yet completed today’s, but did do the last two. I plan to do today’s work out after the kids are in bed.

I started the planking and squats the day the ideas came up, even though the group was waiting until Monday to start. I figured why wait? How long can 30 squats and 1 minute take? So I just did them. I invite you to do them too. Please don’t say that 30 squats won’t do anything. Still sitting on the couch, or chair, now that won’t do anything. Every something you choose to do is better than nothing. Get up and squat! This isn’t a competition, so while form is important so you do not hurt yourself, I will not be in your bathroom, bedroom, living room, (where ever you decide to do them) telling you that you are not doing good enough. SOMETHING is great. ANYTHING is a benefit. I have only been doing the squats for 5 days, but I genuinely think my thighs and butt are already thanking me. I guess maybe I should have taken a before picture, but oh well.

Goals for a new year

Why hello 2013. How are you?

I just thought I would let you in on a few goals I have set for 2013.

I do want to say that I am not the New Years Resolution type of girl. Never have been, pretty sure I never will be. (but never say never, right?) That being said these aren’t resolutions. I needed to create a goal list regardless of what time of year it was. With the new year having just started, it seems like the perfect push to make it happen. I also kind of think writing it down, makes me more accountable to it.

In no particular order;

  1. Save, save, save, budget, budget, budget. In the last year we essentially depleted our savings. After having baby #2 I chose not to return to work. (or after so long they didn’t have a spot for me. Tomato, tomato.) Also, our car motor blew up the day baby was born. All that means we need to re-save now. This time the money needs to be split into three places. Shot term saving, (think weekend camping, or frilly new dress), long term savings, (In case stuff happens, or vacation in Hawaii), and wedding account. (pretty self explanatory) The goal really, is to have three months saved in long term savings, and 5,000 to 10,000 for wedding, short term saving amount is negligible. This is not realistic for one year, but I just want for us to be “on track”. 
  2. Try to incorporate more vegan meals. No we will not be giving up meat and dairy. (at least that’s not the plan) Eating a more vegan diet, has a lot of health benefits, and some cost savings. (see #1) Therefore we plan to try. I already often make 1 vegan recipe, so I want to increase it a bit. 
  3. Get in better shape. Okay, so I really want this to say, “Run a marathon”, but that is clearly not realistic, both physically and financially. I thought I was doing well going to the gym until the kids got sick. Clearly the kids will always get sick, so I need a better plan. A better way to ensure that I am focused on my own health. I am a typical mom in the sense of giving myself away and keeping nothing for me. I would like to work on that through my fitness. I think I can get up at 6 each morning and take the dog for a jog, working up to 3 miles. Don’t worry, I won’t get ahead of myself, I have only done this once. In my own defence, I just thought of it yesterday, while sitting on the couch eating breakfast.
  4. Find a part time job. Part time job will greatly help with #1. It would likely all go into our wedding account, or 90%, but is greatly needed. I have been applying to places sporadically since August. I really think that my availability is an issue, for retail places. 
  5. Complete two college classes. I would like to become a PTA. Yes, it has taken me my whole life to figure out something I would enjoy enough to take classes for. I have already signed up for one class the coming spring semester, and I am on the waiting list for another. I ordered my books, but have yet to pick them up, thanks to sick kiddies. This goal is assuming that I complete the one I am registered for and one more either in the summer or fall. I think I can, I think I can.
